The demise of ‘rules-based international order’

Letters

I am troubled by Mr. Julan Aldover’s recent letter to the editor (“When International Law Becomes A Shield For Tyranny”), which supports the United States and Israel’s attacks on Iran.

I agree that the Iranian regime’s human rights violations are deplorable and indefensible, but this does not justify the preemptive strikes against Iran, let alone targeted assassinations at its leadership.

Under Donald Trump, the US has indiscriminately arrested and deported immigrants without due process, while Israel’s conduct in its war against Hamas (aided by the US) needs no further elaboration.

Just as the US and Israel do not care about human rights at home, they also couldn’t care less about human rights elsewhere; framing this as such is disingenuous. Not even they frame this operation along those lines. This is yet another display of impunity by these two nations and must be viewed in that light.

The US and Israel are bombing Iran not to “liberate” the people of Iran from Islamist tyranny but to get rid of a foreign adversary. The consequences of successfully toppling the regime—whether it is Iran descending into chaos and anarchy, or the Islamic Republic being replaced by a more “accommodating” regime do not matter to them. The future of the people of Iran or anyone on Earth, cannot be entrusted to leaders this bloodthirsty and reckless. That is what the demise of international law and the “rules-based international order” will entail.
