The harsh reality behind mandatory deductions

I write this letter not out of rebellion, but out of disillusionment—and I believe I echo the frustrations of many working Filipinos who are required to contribute monthly to Social Security System (SSS), Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), and Pag-Ibig.

Every payday, a portion of our hard-earned salary is automatically deducted for these so-called social safety nets. On paper, these institutions exist to protect us: a pension when we retire, health coverage when we get sick, and housing support when we want stability. But in practice, the system feels rigged against the very people it’s meant to help.

Let’s talk numbers. A person who has contributed to SSS for 30+ years—often at the maximum level—can expect a pension of P7,000 to P10,000 per month. That’s barely enough for groceries, let alone rent, utilities, or medication. And this assumes they stay employed and healthy long enough to retire.

PhilHealth, meanwhile, promises coverage but often delivers frustration. Even in government hospitals, patients still shoulder significant out-of-pocket expenses. And during emergencies, the system fails when it’s needed—most often buried under paperwork or approval delays.

Pag-Ibig is arguably better run, yet its regular savings program yields modest returns unless you take out a loan—which ironically puts you in debt to access your own money.

We are required to pay. We cannot opt out. But we are not guaranteed peace of mind, only the illusion of it.

At a time when the cost of living continues to climb, these institutions should be a source of relief, not resentment. Reform is not just overdue—it’s essential. We need better transparency, improved returns, stronger coverage, and most of all, a clear assurance that our sacrifices today will lead to security tomorrow.

Until then, many Filipinos will continue to work into their old age—not because they want to, but because they have no choice.
