Waiting for the promised transformations in Marcos’ Sona

President Marcos’ fourth State of the Nation Address (Sona) transcended the typical political rhetoric often associated with such events, instead offering a refreshing and genuinely relatable dialogue with the Filipino people. The President’s delivery was remarkably down-to-earth, “makamasa,” eschewing the formal tone often employed in such addresses and opting for a conversational style that felt intimate and accessible.

This approachable style was further enhanced by the President’s choice to deliver the speech predominantly in Filipino. This linguistic choice ensured that his message resonated deeply with the average Filipino, transcending the barriers often created by complex jargon and formal vocabulary. The simplicity and clarity of his language were commendable, allowing the core message to penetrate without unnecessary obfuscation.

Mr. Marcos’ Sona demonstrated an impressive grasp of the diverse challenges facing the nation. He effectively addressed a wide spectrum of concerns, ranging from the fundamental needs of health care and education to the more complex issues of employment generation, food security, graft and corruption, and the persistent drug problem. His acknowledgment of these multifaceted issues indicated a comprehensive understanding of the nation’s current socioeconomic landscape.

The President’s focus extended to bolstering peace and order, a critical element for national stability and economic progress. His commitment to improving transportation and infrastructure development highlighted a clear vision for a more connected and prosperous Philippines. These aspects were not merely mentioned but were woven into the overall narrative, showcasing their interconnectedness and importance to the overall well-being of Filipino citizens.

The tone of the address was equally impressive. It struck a perfect balance between the authority expected of a President and the warmth and empathy needed to connect with the citizens. The speech was amiable yet firm, demonstrating a presidential demeanor that resonated with a deep understanding of Filipino values and aspirations. This delicate balance was instrumental in ensuring the message was both impactful and reassuring.

What particularly impressed me was the President’s ability to articulate a clear vision for the future while acknowledging the challenges of the present. He didn’t shy away from the difficulties the nation faces, yet he maintained an optimistic and forward-looking outlook. This combination of realism and hope infused the speech with a sense of purpose and determination.

However, the true measure of this Sona will lie in its implementation. The programs, projects, and initiatives outlined by the President will only truly bear fruit if they are effectively translated into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Filipinos. The speech served as an important articulation of the government’s plans, but its success hinges on decisive and impactful action.

I hope that the momentum generated by this address will be sustained and that we will witness a concerted effort to translate the outlined plans into concrete achievements. The nation eagerly awaits the realization of the vision he so eloquently presented.
