Last Oct. 18-19, the University of the Philippines Symphony Orchestra (UPSO) showcased its exceptional musicality at the prestigious 12th China-ASEAN Music Festival in Nanning, China, organized by the Guangxi Arts University.

The festival, renowned for its celebration of living composers and folk music from ASEAN countries, witnessed the UPSO’s outstanding performances, garnering accolades from composers, festival organizers, and audiences alike.

The UPSO, often referred to as the “Orchestra for the People” or “Orkestra ng Bayan,” holds the official designation as the system-wide orchestra for UP. Under the esteemed direction of maestro Josefino Chino Toledo, the orchestra comprises 65 members exclusively drawn from within the UP community, including alumni, students, faculty, and staff across all UP campuses.

The festival marked a significant occasion for the UPSO, as it not only exemplified the orchestra’s commitment to musical excellence but also showcased its role as a cultural ambassador for UP on the global stage.

The UPSO’s participation in the 12th China-ASEAN Music Festival has elevated the international perception of Philippine orchestras, showcasing the skill and professionalism inherent in their performances. The orchestra envisions that their remarkable representation will not only open doors for future opportunities for themselves and the university, but also contribute to the advancement of Filipino musicians on the global stage.

The UPSO’s participation in this prestigious festival was made possible through the unwavering support of UP and UP president Angelo A. Jimenez.
