A pioneering empowerment hub for PWDs
An inclusive world ensures that nobody is left behind.
Such is the aim of the PLUS Center for Adaptive Sports and Physical Rehabilitation in Mandaue City in Cebu, which is designed to boost the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The P2-million PLUS Center, unveiled recently by a cohort of PWD champions, will provide free physical therapy to indigent PWDs and patients recovering from stroke, paralysis and other mobility-impacting conditions. The building will also give PWDs opportunities to learn recreational and competitive sports.
“The PLUS Center is not just a facility; it’s also a symbol of hope and empowerment for many who aspire to break barriers in sports and in life,” said John Paul Maunes, executive director of the Philippine Accessible Disability Services Inc., one of the organizations involved in the project.
PWDs include those who have long-term impairments, whether physical, mental, intellectual or sensory. The disabilities can originate in accidents, diseases, aging, and other conditions.
Some 15 percent of the world’s population live with some form of disability, said the World Health Organization. The National Disability Prevalence Survey showed that in 2016, around 12 percent of Filipinos aged 15 and older experienced severe disability.
Representing another partner, the Mandaue City Councilor Jimmy Lumapas noted: “The PLUS Center will be a cornerstone of support, giving our community members the chance to thrive and succeed beyond their limitations.”
Also joining the initiative are the PWD Federation of Cebu, the Department of Health, Cebu Doctors University, and other rehabilitative science schools, and BingoPlus Foundation, the social development arm of digital entertainment company DigiPlus Interactive.
At the groundbreaking ceremonies, Celeste Jovenir, DigiPlus vice president for Investor Relations and BingoPlus Foundation COO, said, “We are setting in motion a vision where PWDs can thrive, adapt, and pursue careers as athletes, coaches, and more… The PLUS Center will fill a critical gap in PWD healthcare, offering accessible rehabilitation and a path to new opportunities through sports.”
The PLUS Center reflects BingoPlus Foundation’s mission to “Multiply the Good,” to bring empowerment and inclusion to more Filipinos.
