Choosing the right light fixtures for your space

A decorative lighting fixture is a device that holds a light source. It can be mounted on a ceiling or wall, or placed on a table or floor. It can also be surface-mounted or recessed.

Decorative light fixtures can reflect a person’s style and taste. This is one of the first design elements I usually work on when styling a space. It is the earring to my outfit, the mules to my gown, the evening bag to my black dress.

Choosing the right light fixtures can be a daunting task, especially with so many options in the market.

In many residential spaces, layering light fixtures creates a warm and inviting ambiance. Layering means using different sources of light to provide illumination. This makes furniture and artwork stand out even more. Here is a guide to help you layer and choose your light sources for your home.

Pendant lamp

Sometimes called a suspended lamp, this type of lighting is hung from the ceiling. It can be a solo piece or installed in multiples, held by a rod, chain, or cord. Pendant lamps are ideally placed over island counters, nightstands, or anywhere you need focused light. My favorite pieces are from Flos, and they make kitchen counters look so sleek.

Chandeliers are often installed in spaces where the biggest impact is desired.

These are grand fixtures used for bigger spaces that demand more attention.

To be honest, chandeliers are often chosen more for their appearance than for the light they provide, though of course, many may argue otherwise. I prefer to choose them for both practicality and beauty.

Chandeliers are often installed in spaces where the biggest impact is desired, such as the foyer, dining room, living room, stairway, and even a large kitchen. Choosing one can be the hardest decision, as it requires complete trust and understanding with the client. After all, he will live with it every day and, of course, deal with the price point.

Chandeliers can be modern or traditional. Custom pieces can be crafted by our own local manufacturers such as Azcor, Fleur de Lys, and Keystone. For Czechoslovakian-style glass and design, there’s Lasvit or Sans Souci.

Wall sconces

Wall sconces are a lovely way to highlight hallways and entrances. Their lighting is ambient and cozy, and the fixture design matters because it determines the quality of illumination.

The light should not be glaring, as sconces are usually placed at eye level. I love using fabric-covered sconces with shades in different shapes, and I even create XXL wall sconces for lobbies for a more dramatic effect.

For powder rooms, wall sconces are non-negotiable. They create a beautiful mood and instantly elevate any bathroom space. Wall sconces can also glamorize an empty wall, even dressing up a blank space above a sofa.

Poised on a console table, nightstand, or shelf, a table lamp can make a big impact.

Table lamps

For layering an interior space, table lamps create beautiful shadows on walls and add the perfect balance of softness to any room.

You can also change the lampshade from plain white linen to a printed fabric that complements your upholstery and wallpaper. You may even try more unusual shapes to better match your interior style.

Sometimes, recycling an old porcelain or ceramic jar and converting it into a lamp can do wonders.

When my kids outgrew their Polly Pocket and Wiggles toys, I placed the tiny figures in a glass goblet and had Keystone make a table lamp with a cylindrical shade. Instead of giving away years of toy collectibles, I incorporated them into one decorative piece—including a baby shoe—and created a more practical keepsake for my kids’ rooms.

Floor lamp

A floor lamp can brighten any corner. You don’t need much—one or two will do. It should be a stable piece, so I usually choose something big, sturdy, and attractive. A floor lamp can also fill a void in any space.

Rechargeable lamps

Rechargeable lamps are fantastic inventions. I rarely use candles now since these provide excellent lighting for buffet tables, outdoor spaces, and dining tables for intimate dinners. They’re practical for emergencies too. Just plug them into a USB or Type-C charger for a few hours and you’re good to go.

They come in many designer pieces such as Kartell, Flos, Via Bizzuno, St. Louis, and even Baccarat. The Baccarat, St. Louis, and Via Bizzuno lamps make stunning centerpieces for buffet tables. You don’t need flowers or other décor because the lamps themselves are striking enough, and they light up everything beautifully.
