Emerging mastery and showcase of skills
For over three decades, the Kulay Sa Tubig National Watercolor Invitational Competition has been an exclusive platform for exceptional watercolor artists in the Philippines.
Now in its 36th year, this prestigious event continues to enhance the artistry by bringing together talents from across the nation. Gallery Genesis hosts the competition, which has become a cornerstone of the Philippine art scene. It offers a stage where veteran artists and emerging mastery can showcase their technical skills, creativity, and connection to the vibrant Filipino culture.
The hardest medium to master
Watercolor often appears deceptive in its simplicity. However, this elusive art form requires a deep level of expertise and a daring spirit. Only a few artists possess the ability to manipulate water, pigment, and paper in harmony.
Watercolor doesn’t forgive mistakes, making it one of the most challenging and exciting mediums for artists. The uniqueness of each stroke, its transparency, and the unpredictable interaction between pigment and liquid make this medium as dynamic as it is, creating an exhilarating experience for both the artists and the audience.
Quest for top 5 Filipino watercolorists
Kulay Sa Tubig embodies the pursuit of the top 5 Philippine watercolorists, a highly anticipated event element that never fails to excite the art community.
Despite receiving numerous entries, only the most exceptional pieces are displayed, making it a rigorous selection process. Artists submit works that cover a wide range of themes, often encapsulating various aspects of cultural identity. Through breathtaking depictions of pastoral landscapes, bustling cityscapes, and cultural traditions, each artist presents their unique interpretation of what it means to be a prized Filipino gem.
For those who achieve the honor of being named among the top 5, it’s not just a recognition, it’s a transformation. They join an exclusive group of artists who have previously triumphed, and for some, it serves as a stepping stone for further success in the art world. The competition has the power to elevate an artist’s career to new heights, inspiring them to push their boundaries and reach for greater artistic achievements.
Hall of Fame
For those who have transcended the competition by winning three times, the yearly competition bestows a place in the “Hall of Fame.” This rare achievement marks the pinnacle of a watercolorist’s career.
Some notable names in the Hall of Fame include Jose ‘Ping’ Ceriola, Margarita ‘Marge’ Lim, and Egai Fernandez, to name a few. Their works inspire artists and art lovers alike, demonstrating the heights of technical skill and artistic insight that watercolor can achieve.
