Basilica Minore del Santo Niño
It is known to be one of the most revered and oldest churches in the country. Located in the heart of Cebu City, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is home to the Santo Niño de Cebu, a gift from Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon’s wife, Queen Juana, in 1521 which symbolized the birth of Christianity in the country. The Santo Niño de Cebu is considered to be miraculous and holds immense religious significance for Filipinos, drawing pilgrims and devotees from all over the country.
Celestial Gardens
The Celestial Garden in Banawa, Cebu is actually a memorial park and cemetery. But what makes this quaint garden a Holy Week destination is its depiction of the Stations of the Cross. Life-sized statues are displayed all over the area spanning over two kilometers. With a serene view and tranquil vibe, Celestial Gardens becomes a place for reflection and prayer to those who seek peace during the Holy Week.
Simala Church (Miraculous Mama Mary Shrine)
Dedicated to the blessed Virgin Mary, the Simala Shrine in Sibonga, Cebu is known primarily for two things: its Gothic-like architecture that makes it look like a majestic castle, and its power for answering prayer among devotees. Many visit the shrine to seek spiritual guidance, healing, and blessings. Thus, miracles are often attributed to the Blessed Virgin for pilgrims. Prayer vigils, Stations of the Cross, and a solemn Good Friday procession are what you can expect during Holy Week.
OAD Tabor Hills
Inspired by Mount Tabor in Israel, where the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ took place, this sanctuary was established by the Order of the Discalced Augustinians (OAD). Their vision was to provide pilgrims with a tranquil space for worship, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. There is a chapel for prayer, a shop for religious devotional paraphernalia, and Stations of the Cross. What makes this place extra special is its peaceful aura brought by being surrounded by nature. From the top of the hill, there is an amazing view of the city, as well as a big cross where you can pause and reflect during the Holy Week.
