Siquijor on the map: A rising star in PH tourism

Eds Locando

With 7,641 islands, the Philippines is home to an unspoken competition among lesser-known destinations vying to become the next tourism hotspot.

Leading the charge is Siquijor, a province in the Negros Island Region of the Visayas, which has seen a significant rise in overnight stays, with 2024 figures reaching 241,529—surpassing its pre-pandemic total of 168,366. Its untouched natural beauty and secluded charm, amplified by growing social media exposure, have made it a top choice for international travelers.

Agoda’s latest annual ranking even naming Siquijor as the fastest-growing travel destination in the Philippines.

Accessibility and Tourist Spots

Siquijor’s strategic location near popular tourist hubs like Bohol and Cebu makes it a natural addition to travelers’ itineraries.

While currently accessible by sea, the island’s connectivity is set to improve with the upcoming Siquijor Airport, further enhancing travel convenience across the country.

Renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, and hidden natural wonders, Siquijor captivates adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. The island has become particularly popular among European and American tourists, who consistently rank among its top visitors.

While attractions are scattered across the province, the Municipality of San Juan serves as the island’s primary tourism hub, just a 20-minute ride from Siquijor Port. The island’s southern coastline also boasts a thriving underwater ecosystem, making it a premier destination for diving enthusiasts.

Growing Interest from Investors

With limited accommodation options and a steady rise in tourist arrivals, existing establishments in Siquijor are experiencing high occupancy rates. The island’s hospitality sector is currently dominated by boutique hotels, standalone accommodations, and Airbnb properties, catering primarily to economy and midscale travelers, including backpackers and diving enthusiasts.

However, Siquijor’s increasing popularity has also drawn the attention of investors eager to capitalize on its growth.

In the coming years, approximately 460 new hotel keys are expected to be added to the market, as more investors recognize the island’s strong potential. Some developers already have a foothold in Siquijor and are planning to introduce their established brands, while others are actively exploring opportunities to tap into the island’s expanding tourism and real estate landscape.

Increasing Demand for Diverse Accommodations

Siquijor is experiencing increasing demand for a broader range of accommodations, particularly in the upper midscale to luxury segments. Expanding and diversifying the island’s hospitality offerings will not only meet the evolving preferences of travelers but also enhance market competitiveness and further establish Siquijor as a prime investment destination.

Beachfront properties in San Juan are scarce, presenting a valuable opportunity for early investors.

While property prices in key municipalities such as Siquijor and San Juan have been gradually rising, they remain significantly more affordable than those in other premier resort destinations in the Philippines.

Rising star

With increasing social media exposure, Siquijor is no longer a hidden gem but a rising star in Philippine tourism. As interest grows, the demand for high quality accommodations, commercial establishments, and vacation homes is also expected to rise.

Investors who enter the market early stand to benefit from the island’s ongoing transformation.
