The allure of Southern living

Ar. Vittoria Mawis-Aliston

Countryside views, a white picket fence, and fresh, clean air—with elements like these, what’s not to like about Southern living?

Originally associated with the American South, Southern living evokes traditional values and a relaxed, leisurely lifestyle. More often than not, it applies to suburban homes that strike a balance between modern conveniences and natural comforts. These homes are usually far enough from the city to escape pollution and crowding, yet close enough to make commuting for work possible.

Today, let us explore the reasons why Southern living continues to draw fans. After reading this article, you just might be encouraged to move to the South and start afresh in the suburbs.

While living in the South is far enough from the Metro’s chaos, it is still very easy to travel through Skyways and toll roads.

A relaxed lifestyle

Here in the Philippines, Southern living usually brings to mind neighborhoods located in the south of Metro Manila.

Muntinlupa, Laguna, Las Piñas, Parañaque, and even Batangas are some of the places where many suburban neighborhoods have popped up.

Although these areas are gradually becoming urbanized, they still offer the charm of the countryside, where life moves at a gentler pace.

This slow-paced lifestyle is one of the biggest draws of Southern living. With workplaces distinctly separate from their houses, residents can leave their work behind when they head home. Surrounded by lush greenery, they’re able to slow down, relax, and enjoy the best of what Mother Nature has to offer. It’s an ideal setting to spend quality time with loved ones, especially on weekends.

Modern comforts

Access to premium amenities is another reason why people move to the South.

With many neighborhoods offering swimming pools, basketball courts, golf ranges, and other outdoor venues, you’ll have plenty of activities to choose from if you live in the suburbs. Some neighborhoods also have exclusive fitness centers, children’s play areas and other indoor amenities that might appeal even to the homebodies.

If you’re looking to enjoy various hobbies focusing on exercise and socialization, then living in the South just might be for you.

Work and school opportunities

Even if they are far away from the metropolis, suburban neighborhoods pave the way for more jobs and schools in their vicinity.

With the rise of residential population in these homes, more businesses open, leading to new work opportunities. The number of educational institutions also begins to rise in the community, with parents choosing to enroll their kids close to home.

This has become particularly evident in areas such as Sta. Rosa in Laguna and Batangas. Even if they are not exactly adjacent to Metro Manila, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that there are a lot of international schools and established universities that have built their campuses in these areas. Your children will be able to access quality education without having to travel far.
