What every dreamy coastal home needs

IDr. Chat Fores

Coastal homes in the Philippines are usually second homes and are sometimes called weekend homes.

I would love to have a weekend home where I can just kick back and relax. This, however, requires good upkeep, low-maintenance furniture and decor, and a secure area. Of course, the interiors have to be as stylish as usual.

If I were to build and fix up my own coastal home, I would have some non-negotiables.

A cabana creates a shaded outdoor retreat.

A mud zone

A mud zone is a must for these homes so dirty shoes and clothing can be left in this area. The mud zone shields your living room and other parts of the home from dirt coming in.

A huge deck

This is one of the most important areas in a coastal home. The outer deck should have a good seating area and viewing space. It is also considered the second living room.

Outdoor shower

This is a must! An outdoor shower with a semi-private partition is ideal for cleaning sand off your body. If an outdoor shower cannot be accommodated, a foot bath outside would work.

Large windows bring natural light into the coastal home.

Huge windows

These should bring the natural light in. Big windows go hand in hand with a beach home.

Durable finishes

Limewash paint, anti-mold finishes, natural fabrics, abaca, leather and linens are all good options for a coastal home.

A huge open kitchen with a breakfast nook

This is currently my favorite space. The kitchen has become a place for family gatherings more than the dining room. A breakfast nook can double as a mini office space while you are in your weekend home.

A fabulous outdoor barbecue grill

Take it from Henry Cavill: There’s nothing better than a good barbecue setup for a great meal. I am loving the outdoor grill from Ernestomeda, which comes with its own sink. It’s like an outdoor kitchenette made to withstand the weather.

Lounge setups throughout the home create spaces to relax anywhere.

Lounge corners all over the house

I would love to have different lounge setups in every part of the house: in the basement, near the living room, in the lanai, in the master, the library, wherever! Having the freedom to read a book or talk with your family anywhere is the best thing.

A dining area with a kitchenette that opens into the living room, then the lanai, is a perfect setup.

Missoni accents and Jim Thompson pillows would liven up the space.

Vibrant colors and decor

Why go boring? Teal, yellow, hot pink, baby blue and lime green can bring life into the space. Missoni accents and Jim Thompson pillows would liven it up even more.

Nautical theme

A nautical theme for my tableware is something I’ve always loved. Blame it on growing up in the ’80s with Ralph Lauren all over the magazines! Navy blue, red, stripes, a little leather and abaca are all you need.

A side table adds function to a coastal lounge area.

Accessories

Catch-all baskets, rugs, accent mirrors, foldable beach chairs, huge beach towels, robes and clothing hooks are accessories to consider when dressing up your beach home.

Accent mirrors add style while brightening coastal interiors.
