Absent aces not slowing Gilas women

Gilas Pilipinas women may have begun preparing for the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup without some key players, but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy remains optimistic ahead of the continental showcase in China.
“The team is not complete yet because we do have a lot of players—who we anticipate to be in the roster—who are still in the US,” Dy, a former coach, told reporters recently on the sidelines of the basketball body’s National Congress held at the Meralco complex in Ortigas.
“But it’s the same program, it’s still coach Pat [Aquino], so they’re very familiar with the system and we’re confident that we’ll do well in the Asia Cup,” she added.
Among these players are guards Ella Fajardo and naturalized ace Vanessa de Jesus, who already committed to backstopping the National Five once again when it plunges into the July 13 to 20 tournament that will be held in Shenzhen.
