Akari names Mosuela as new man in charge

What could be the final piece of the Akari facelift fell into place on Tuesday when the team announced the appointment of Raffy Mosuela as interim head coach with less than a month remaining before the new Premier Volleyball League season opens. Mosuela takes over from the resigned Jorge Edson Souza de Brito as he tries to whip the Chargers into championship-contending shape going into their third season. And he will have the guidance of Japanese Taka Minowa, the man in charge of volleyball operations of the Akari and Nxled squads.

“When it comes to the games, more on tactical, the job still falls on us (Akari coaching staff), but he (Minowa) still gives his input in the training,” Mosuela said when asked of the role of Minowa, who is also the head coach of the Chameleons.

“Everything that he tells me is very informative, such as in the drills. [During] training, if he notices something, he comes in to [help] in the individual skills of the [players],” he said of the Japanese coach. After failing to make it past the eliminations since joining the league in 2022, Akari signed Gretchel Soltones to be one of its hitters and join a solid core that already has Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Erika Raagas, Faith Nisperos, middle blocker Fifi Sharma and setter Michelle Cobb, the Chargers’ team captain.
