Barros, volleyball star who won PH hearts, named Finals guest

The athlete who single-handedly put women’s volleyball in the limelight here almost three decades ago is returning to the Philippines.

And Leila Barros, the Brazilian superstar who lit the passion for volleyball among Filipino sports fans, said she is looking forward to that comeback.

“What a joy it will be to reconnect with these passionate volleyball fans,” said Barros, an Olympic bronze medalist in 1996 and 2000. “See you soon!”

Barros, who built a fandom of her own in the country 25 years ago, is the guest of honor in the 2025 Men’s World Championship finals on Sept. 28 at Mall of Asia Arena.

It will be a reunion of sorts for Brazil’s volleyball legend and the Philippines, who formed a love affair during the 2000 World Grand Prix. Barros’ presence ensured that Brazil was perennially the “home” team during its stints in the Grand Prix here.

The 53-year-old Barros, now a senator, chairs the Sports Committee in the Brazilian Senate and has previously presided over the Environment Committee, led the Women’s Caucus and served as Deputy Floor Leader for the Government.

Her legislative agenda focuses on three key areas: protecting women—especially in the fight against domestic violence—strengthening sports and safeguarding the environment.

More than two decades after her last visit to Manila, the love of Philippine volleyball for Barros still excites her.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I receive this very special invitation. Returning to the Philippines, where I have always been welcomed with such warmth, is incredibly exciting,” said Barros.
