Cignal looks impressive in dismantling of Akari

Cignal was not in its most competitive form at the last conference because of its manpower woes. One game into the PVL On Tour, and the HD Spikers seem to have addressed that concern.

A convincing 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 blunting of Akari at the start of the preseason tournament seems to prove that coaching staff and management did the right things, as Cignal’s new acquisitions did what they were brought to do and helped in the one-sided win over a contender.

“We really prepared for this tournament, but we know that we are still lacking a lot,” coach Shaq Delos Santos said in Filipino. “But the good thing is that the team responded well [to the challenges and adjustments].”

It has been a busy few months for Cignal as it got busy in the free agent market and the Rookie Draft.

Erika Santos, formerly of PLDT, made the biggest impact after pouring in 14 attack points, showing that she is the missing piece that Cignal has been looking for to fill the opposite hitter’s role.

Tin Tiamzon finished with 11 points, all but one from attacks, and 14 excellent receptions, filling in well for the void left by Vanie Gandler, who is busy with national team duties.

“It’s overwhelming because it’s our first game in the On Tour and also my first game with (Cignal),” Santos said. “But [despite my good opening performance] there’s no room for complacency. I want to learn more.”
