Davison adds teeth to PLDT defense
Savi Davison turned her weakness into a strength in the pros.
Known for her attacking prowess, Davison rose to the top of the blocking department in the PVL Reinforced Conference with 15 kill blocks, averaging 0.94 per set. She leads Choco Mucho’s Maddie Madayag (0.88), ZUS Coffee rookie AC Miner (0.68) and multiple Best Middle Blocker winner Pangs Panaga (0.67) of Creamline.
Davison was happy to thrive in that department in the PVL, especially since it’s an import-laden tournament.
“I was actually the worst blocker in college. After college, I kind of tried to perfect the craft and I’m just glad that it’s kinda showing,” said Davison after dropping 21 points in PLDT’s 25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over Galeries Tower on Saturday at the Candon City Arena.
The Filipino-Canadian spiker attributed her initial success to luck, but she has clearly gotten better at timing her blocks.
And that makes PLDT scarier on defense, with strong blockers in Kianna Dy, Russian import Anastasiia Bavykina, Majoy Baron, Mika Reyes and Dell Palomata.
“I’m not gonna lie, I get lucky at times, but for the most part it’s more like a conscious effort, like mentally, watching people. I’m just glad that it’s being executed well and I’m glad it’s turning into points for our team,” she said.
PLDT tallied 15 blocks against Galeries, as Davison and Bavykina combined for 36 of the team’s 54 kills.
Davison and the High Speed Hitters inched a win closer to a quarterfinal berth with a 5-1 record.
