Eldrew can’t wait to make it a Yulo show for PH in LA 2028
Karl Eldrew Yulo has never ceased to be jumpy at the thought of joining his older brother, Olympic double-gold medalist Carlos Yulo, in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
But the younger Yulo, who just turned 17 last week, knows that he has to build an impressive resume first before participating in the big leagues with his famed brother, and that starts off in the 2025 Junior World Artistic Gymnastics Championships that the country will be hosting.
“I have to be in the top 3 of the junior world championships and be the best in every tournament I will compete in,” Yulo told the Inquirer during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night on Monday at Manila Hotel.
Standing adjacently close to each other, Eldrew and Carlos, the first Filipino to capture two gold medals in one Olympics, gladly granted interviews and gamely posed for photos.
“Of course, it’s a dream to compete with him, but I have to work hard to reach that level,” said Eldrew, last year’s gold medalist in the vault of the Asian junior championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The older Yulo, also two-time world champion, ruled the men’s vault and floor exercise events in the Paris Olympics, and for that, was named the PSA Athlete of the Year.
Eldrew isn’t eligible to compete in the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December as male gymnasts younger than 18 are prohibited.
The Junior Worlds, where 80 countries will participate, is set from July 12 to July 21.
“I always push myself to the limit every day, I know I can do it,” said Eldrew.
