Go has perfect swan song as Benilde sweeps Letran

Mycah Go just cemented her College of St. Benilde legacy in the form of a fourth straight NCAA women’s volleyball championship that was sprinkled with two more MVP trophies.

Bound for the pros, Go made her swan song something to remember after guiding the Lady Blazers to that historic streak with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 drubbing of the Letran Lady Knights and a sweep of the Season 100 Finals on Wednesday.

“This has been our goal all season long, and we did it,” said Go in Filipino, after she was also named the season and finals MVP. “There were several ups and downs, and the pressure is big being the defending champions, but we’re able to pull through.’’

Cristy Ondangan hammered the point that sealed the title, capping off a 13-point effort, with Clydel Catarig delivering 11 points off the bench.

Zamantha Nolasco, the tournament’s best middle blocker for the second season in a row, had nine points like Go.

“Two MVPs in one day. This is really special, but I won’t be able to achieve them without my teammates,” said Go, who was selected 17th overall by the Zus Thunderbelles in the recent PVL Draft. “This is for our team.”

Vanessa Sarie had 12 points and Judiel Nitura added 11 for the Lady Knights.

The Lady Blazers were simply unfazed right from the beginning.

“We went through a difficult time to defend this title,” said coach Onyok Getigan. “It was a good thing that the season was long, we were able to adjust in the second round.’’

Refusing to fall into a deep hole, the Lady Knights engaged the defending champions in a fierce exchange in Set 2 only to be frustrated by Ondangan’s forays.

Ondangan landed three straight hits that created the separation CSB needed before Aya Densing’s power tip and Ash Lleses’s strike through the block ended the set.

As their confidence rocketed, the Lady Blazers never wavered and just went through the motions of sweeping the challengers with Nolasco, Lleses and Catarig joining forces with Go.
