High Speed Hitters, Flying Titans take on struggling foes
PLDT and Choco Mucho return to action on Tuesday as they battle separate foes to keep their hot streaks in the PVL All-Filipino Conference going at the Filoil Playtime Centre in San Juan.
Nothing less than the solo lead is at stake for the High Speed Hitters in their 4 p.m. collision with Galeries Tower, as Savi Davison and Kim Dy continue to flaunt one of the most feared 1-2 guns in the tournament, even as the crowd-darling Flying Titans take on dangerous Farm Fresh in the 6:30 p.m. contest.
“We don’t really care who we face,” PLDT coach Rald Ricafort said in Filipino after dispatching of rock-solid ZUS Coffee last week. “We have the same mindset, whatever the rank of the team we play against.”
Formidable twosome
With a 5-1 slate and tied with Creamline, the High Speed Hitters can leapfrog to the top and displace sister team Cignal, which actually has a 5-2 record but holds the lead with 16 points.
And while Davison and Dy make for a very formidable offensive twosome, the High Speed Hitters are enjoying a lot of success because Mika Reyes and Majoy Baron form a fearsome defensive tandem at the net, which is something PLDT is expected to take advantage of against the Highrisers.
Galeries sits at 2-4 and will be coming off a two-game losing streak.
The Flying Titans are getting into the groove with Eya Laure and Sisi Rondina leading the attack.
The two ex-University of Santo Tomas superstars in the UAAP have teamed up for the first time in the pros and are seen as the answers to Choco Mucho’s prolonged search for a breakthrough title.
Proven capable
After a rocky start, the Flying Titans have won their last two games and are looking to climb above 0.500 for the first time.
“We will continue to work hard for every win,” Choco Mucho coach Dante Alinsunurin said in Filipino. “The players know what they need to do.”
Despite losing their last two matches–both in five sets–the Foxies have proven capable of pushing stronger teams to the limit.
Trisha Tubu continues to be one of the league’s most explosive scorers. But she would need solid support from the seasoned Ces Molina, Royse Tubino, Mylene Paat and Riri Meneses.
With the top four teams advancing directly to the Qualifying Round, every win remains crucial as the race toward the semifinals intensifies.
