Lady Spikers have to be laser-precise against Bulldogs

La Salle and National University (NU) battle for the crown for the third time in four seasons, another skirmish for supremacy in what has become one of the defining rivalries of UAAP women’s volleyball.

After taking out fellow powerhouse University of Santo Tomas in four sets during the Final Four last Saturday, the Lady Spikers now brace for a rubber match against the Lady Bulldogs—fully aware that there’s still plenty of work to be done.

“I’m somewhat happy, because we had a slow start,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus shortly after the win over the Golden Tigresses at Smart Araneta Coliseum. “[Though] there’s still plenty that we need to fix.”

De Jesus’ words weren’t borne out of frustration. They came from necessity.

Facing the defending champions requires more than just grit—it demands precision, resilience and a level of consistency La Salle has yet to fully show this season.

There will be very little room for error, especially against a tightly knit squad that twice won on this stage in the last three years.

“We know NU—they’ve been playing together since high school, and they have deep chemistry and experience,” De Jesus said.

Pride a big thing

“We really need to prepare. I still have a lot to fix in this team,” he said. “That’s why earlier, I said I was only ‘somewhat happy’—because there are still things I want to see that I haven’t seen yet.”

While De Jesus acknowledged the gaps in his team’s play, he remained confident his charges will be ready when it counts.

“If the players bring out what I’m expecting, we might have a big chance.”

Beyond talent, the Lady Spikers can also count on their pride—one that has been shaped by De Jesus, the architect behind La Salle’s 12 UAAP championships.

“I think the most important thing going into the Finals is for La Salle players to carry pride with them,” said cornerstone Angel Canino.

“Coming into these Finals, you need values that you can share with the team. That shows on the court,” she went on. “Discipline and respect for the opponent—both of which coach Ramil is known for.”

The Lady Spikers also know that pride alone won’t cut it. Not against an enemy that’s so used to high-stakes duels like the one that unfolds starting on Sunday. The right frame of mind is just as critical.

“The job’s not done. Actually, it’s just beginning,” said Alleiah Malaluan.

“We’re one step closer to our goal, so we’re going to keep pushing forward,” said blocking whiz Amie Provido.
