Local aces battle Asian standouts

The best from the Philippines will take a shot at the ICTSI PH Ladies Masters title starting Feb. 4 at Summit Point in Lipa, Batangas, as the likes of Princess Superal, Mafy Singson and Chanelle Avaricio battle bets from the Asian region in the kickoff leg of the Taiwan LPGA circuit.

The 54-hole championship, which will have a $200,000 (around P11.6 million) pot, will be a full-field event that will also have players from South Korean Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia competing over a course that will be used by the event for the first time.

Kickoff leg

That the event is the kickoff leg of the TLPGA circuit speaks highly of the big role that the country now plays in women’s professional golf in the region, as there are 16 more legs lined up for the rest of the year, and everyone would want to start their respective seasons on the right foot, so to speak.

Superal, the Step Up Tour in Japan regular, spearheads the PH challenge together with Sarah Ababa, the Davao native who won the LPGT’s Order of Merit title last year.

The 22-year-old Singson is one of the dark horses, her game honed by several stints in China, where she just came from on Wednesday. She will leave a week before the PH Ladies Masters to play in the Indonesia Open and admitted that she will be cramming, somewhat to gain some sort of local knowledge of Summit Point. INQ
