Phillips ready to author underdog story with Chameleons
MJ Phillips is embracing the challenge of carrying the Petro Gazz Angels’ championship pedigree into the next chapter of her career with the Nxled Chameleons.
“Who doesn’t like an underdog story? Honestly, I think it’d be great,” Phillips said after her move—along with Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo and several former Angels—was officially announced by Nxled. “We’re up for the challenge.”
A two-time champion and two-time Finals MVP, Phillips is eager to help reshape a Chameleons squad coming off a difficult stretch. Nxled went winless in the Reinforced Conference and managed just two victories in 13 games in the All-Filipino Conference.
“Nxled came from the bottom—or close to it—so it’s going to be a challenge,” said the multi-awarded middle blocker. “But we’re all up for it.”
‘Really bummed’
Phillips is also looking forward to working under a new system, particularly with an Italian coach at the helm.
“I’m excited to have an Italian coach. I’ve never played under one before,” she said. “He has a strong coaching background, so I feel like I have a lot to learn. I’m glad many of the Petro Gazz girls are still with me and at the same time, being with new players makes it feel like a fresh start. I’m really excited about what we can showcase next.”
Like her fellow former Angels, Phillips admitted it was difficult to part ways with Petro Gazz, a franchise she had been with since 2022. Still, she is determined to continue the winning culture she helped build—this time in green.
“I’m really bummed about leaving Petro Gazz. I was with them for about five years and I truly appreciate everything,” Phillips said. “But I also appreciate Nxled for giving us a new home. I’m excited about the new players, the competition in the gym and what we can bring to the table in the upcoming conference.”
The 6-foot middle blocker anchors a loaded Nxled frontline that includes former Petro Gazz teammate Ranya Musa, Mayang Nuique, Jaycel delos Reyes and Krich Macaslang, along with newcomers Aby Maraño and Aduke Ogunsanya.
After just a few days of training, Phillips has already felt the intensity—and the warmth—inside the Chameleons’ camp.
