Que has more than enough motivation when TCC Invitational rolls along

Musong R. Castillo

Angelo Que closed out the 2025 local season with “another achievement unlocked” after winning his first PGT Order of Merit title.

Turning 47 this year and still maintaining that jolly personality wherever he plays, Que is hoping to start this season by unlocking another, when he goes for a fourth win in The Country Club Invitational that gets going in just over two weeks in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“It’ll be another achievement unlocked,” Que told the Inquirer when teased with the possibility of a fourth TCC win that would allow him to break out of a tie with Juvic Pagunsan. “I will definitely give it my best (shot).”

Best of last year

Que banners a strong field—the best of the best of the local tour from the previous year—that will play possibly the most demanding layout there is in the country.

The Country Club at this time of the year has swirling winds and its brute distance alone can take away the chances of more than half of the 30-strong field once the first drive is hit.

And while the P6 million TCC Invitational takes the lid off the men’s circuit on Jan. 27, local golf promises to have a very busy year with the continuous holding of the Ladies PGT, the ever-growing Junior PGT and the Intercollegiate Tournament, which will enter its second season this year.

South Korea’s Gwon Minwook is expected to defend his TCC crown, with Philippine resident Guido Van der Valk, a Dutchman, seeking to become the third player after Que and Pagunsan to win the event three times.

Van der Valk lost to Gwon last year.

Ladies also get going

A big event, the $200,000 Philippine Ladies Masters, actually starts the local women’s season on Feb. 4, with the 54-hole tournament littered with international flavor. Summit Point and Country Club in Lipa, Batangas, will be the site of the event.

Junior golf, on the other hand, takes center stage beginning April 7 to April 9 at Summit Point, but with a retooled and more student-friendly calendar.

For the first time, the Luzon and the Visayas-Mindanao series will be staged simultaneously, ensuring minimal disruption to school schedules while taking advantage of favorable weather conditions.
