Singson resumes search for breakthrough win
Mafy Singson will come into the resumption of the Ladies PGT at Forest Hills this week still looking for her breakthrough win as a pro, and a lot tougher than the decorated amateur that made her debut earlier this year.
“Every loss, every setback, toughens all of us,” swing guru Bong Lopez, who has handled Singson since the Davao native was still a child prodigy, told the Inquirer on Sunday. “She’s learned a lot and the good thing about it is that [it] hasn’t disheartened her.”
Lopez was referring to a botched chance for Singson to become a winner in her pro debut during the Apo Golf leg, the start of the year’s circuit last March, where Singson blew a five-shot lead at the start of the final round to lose to Sarah Ababa, another Apo product.
“That’s way behind her now. She’s learned from that. She’s smarter, she’s tougher.”
Six legs later, Singson remains as a regular fixture at Manila Southwoods where she plays out of, as Lopez has been keeping a keen eye on his ward for the past month or so.
“Nothing special, just maintenance pointers to see how she improves more,” Lopez said.
South Korean Jiwon Lee is the favorite in the event.
