Tiger Sands extend beach volleyball dynasty
Outdoors, where volley isn’t played on its regular surface, University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the closest thing to a sure win.
The school’s men’s and women’s beach volleyball squads proved that much.
The Tiger Sands completed another golden double, stretching their dominance in the UAAP by disposing of National University (NU) in both divisions on Tuesday at Sands SM By The Bay.
Women’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Gen Eslapor and teammate Sofiah Pagara were on a different level, cruising past NU’s Honey Grace Cordero and Kly Orillaneda, 21-10, 21-17, to claim the title.
That victory ran up UST’s championship streak to six seasons.
Alche Gupiteo, the men’s MVP, and Rancel Varga had a tougher time, steeling themselves late in the second set to forge a 21-15, 24-22 victory over Bulldogs James Buytrago and Alex Iraya to notch a fifth straight crown. UST has now won nine women’s beach volleyball titles and eight in the men’s division.
