UAAP gives Ateneo more time to complete probe

Rommel Fuertes Jr.

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has granted Ateneo de Manila University an extension to submit the findings of its internal investigation into the June 8 incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, that claimed the lives of team staff members Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the UAAP said it moved the submission deadline from July 15 to July 24.

“The University Athletic Association of the Philippines has granted Ateneo de Manila University’s request to extend the deadline for the submission of its official findings on the June 8, 2026 incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, from July 15 to July 24, 2026,” the league said.

The UAAP said Ateneo requested the extension before the original deadline to allow the university to complete its internal investigation.

Sanctions stay

“Ateneo requested the extension before the original deadline to complete its internal investigation and submit its report. The UAAP Board approved the request during its meeting,” the statement read.

The extension means the preventive sanctions previously imposed by the league will remain in effect.

“All previously announced preventive measures remain in effect during the extension period, including the barring of the concerned members of the Ateneo coaching staff from all UAAP-related activities,” the UAAP said.

The sanctions have left much of Ateneo’s coaching staff sidelined. Louie Alas continues to serve as interim head coach of the Blue Eagles, while former Ateneo standout Nico Salva has assumed the role of team manager pending the outcome of the university’s investigation.
