Wakeboarder Trinidad secures World Games berth
Raphael Trinidad book a slot to the 2025 World Games after claiming the gold medal in the IWWF (International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation) Asia and Oceania Cable Wakeboard and Wakeskate Championships.
The Cebu native ruled the wakeboard open men’s category after compiling 81.67 points at Deca Wake Park Clark in Angeles, Pampanga, fulfilling a dream and knowing that he will have to work extra hard to prove his worth in Chengdu, China in August.
“It feels good to win in an international competition, especially at this level,” Trinidad said. “But I know I have to perform even better in the World Games where the best in my sport will compete.”
A two-time silver medalist in the IWWF World Championships, Trinidad secured the World Games spot by defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Stanislav Fidelsky, who tallied 77.67 points, and Thailand’s Luke Atirat Carrick, whose 73.67 points completed the podium.
The Philippines did extremely well in the wakeboard events after amassing four golds, five silvers and four bronze medals.
Trinidad’s entry to the quadrennial World Games which showcases sports not played in the Olympics has amplified the country’s medal chances.
Karateka Junna Tsukii captured the gold medal in women’s kumite (50kg) in the previous worlds held in Birmingham, Alabama, United States in 2022.
Overall, the Philippines bagged two golds, five silver and five bronze medals since joining the tournament in 1985 London.
