Buyers looking for an affordable new vehicle, whether as their first car or as useful second transport, usually think of a small sedan or hatchback. Style, safety and comfort may be sacrificed for the price. Chery has an intriguing alternative: a well-equipped crossover SUV that has plenty of space and standard features, at an affordable price: that’s the New Tiggo 2 Pro.

The new Chery New Tiggo 2 Pro is a crossover SUV measuring 4200mm long x 1760mm, with a 2555mm wheelbase. Thanks to its SUV configuration, it has high 186mm ground clearance. Chery lends the new Tiggo 2 Pro some premium styling touches, such as a “checkered flag” front grille.

This is complemented by the LED daytime running lights with a similar motif. At the bumper level are the projector headlights, with auto-on feature. The taillight cluster spans the entire width of the car for some added sleekness. 16-inch dark gunmetal-finish alloy wheels and satin silver roof rails round out the exterior package.

Inside, the Chery Tiggo 2 has space for five, with the greater space of an SUV-tall roofline. Seats are trimmed in fabric and leatherette. Adjustable headrests are at all five seating positions. The laser-engraved silver dashboard design complements the soft-touch panels.

A row of switches operates the AC controls, while a useful volume knob conveniently adjusts the audio. Storage spaces abound, from the multi-level “gadget desk” to card holder, bag hook and removable cup holders. A deep cargo area is behind the rear seat, good for 420 liters of storage. The rear bench seat can split fold 60:40 to provide a flat, versatile load space, should you need to transport that extra-large flat-screen TV or small furniture.

The new Tiggo 2, true to its “Pro” name, carries features that may be surprising at this price range. Given the importance of infotainment, the Tiggo 2 Pro obliges with a 10.25-inch center touchscreen. You can connect your smartphone via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and there’s a mobile charger for your instant convenience. You can also connect and charge via USB-A and USB-C ports.

The screen doubles as the reverse camera screen and parking sensor display. The reverse assist goes a step further with dynamic auxiliary line display—you can more easily slot the Tiggo 2 Pro into a parking space thanks to the yellow lines. Behind the flat-bottom steering wheel is a combination analog and digital display. Tachometer and speedometer are easy-to-read analog gauges, while between them, a 3.5-inch digital display shows fuel economy and other info.

Approach the Tiggo 2 Pro with the key in your pocket and the car automatically unlocks. A start-stop button fires up the engine. Chery has equipped with Tiggo 2 Pro with an all-new engine. The 1.5-liter, four-cylinder unit delivers 113ps and 138Nm. It’s paired with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT. The DOHC engine and CVT combo delivers smooth acceleration, allowing us to maneuver the Tiggo 2 Pro unobtrusively within city roads and parking areas.

On our sloped parking exit ramp “torture test,” the Tiggo 2 Pro performed well, with adequate grip and no need to frantically build up speed before going up. The CVT is equipped with a manual-override gate, allowing you to shift through the 9 virtual forward gears. Sport mode can be engaged via a button on the center console. The parking brake is likewise electronically activated.

The Tiggo 2 Pro, by the way, is also available in manual transmission.
