BIZ BUZZ: Another first for Nickel Asia

Avatar

Listed mining company Nickel Asia Corp. (NAC) is making another first in the mining sector: leveraging digital technology in embarking on its long-term sustainability journey.

NAC partnered with board portal provider Azeus Convene ESG to go digital in adopting an innovative approach to handling data, especially toward environmental, social and governance.

Under this collaboration, NAC will digitalize data related to greenhouse gases, water consumption and safety hours as well as create a baseline to achieve net zero carbon by 2050.

According to NAC chief sustainably officer Jose Bayani Baylon, the firm will do away with manual spreadsheets. Instead, it will adopt technological-driven processes to achieve sustainability ambitions.

NAC assistant vice president for sustainability Edwin Nerva said all the data to be collected in real-time will give them a clearer picture “of where we are right now and where we want to go moving forward to be better as a company.”

Going digital with its sustainability roadmap will enable NAC to craft business strategies, make sound decisions and continuously improve the integration of sustainable initiatives into its operations.

“From day one when we first crafted our Sustainability Roadmap in 2021 to forming Technical Working Groups within our business units and operating companies to identify materiality issues and concerns, down to spotting the gaps and designing a plan of action to address these gaps,” Baylon added.

Here’s hoping that the company will remain laser-focused in embarking on its ESG journey.
