Seeking comfort in discomfort

“Into the woods and through the fear, you have to take the journey.” Stephen Sondheim

Craving a new direction, I welcome change and freedom into my system. What better way to live a full life than to take that leap of faith and overcome fear to pursue a goal! For more than a year, I was living in my comfort zone to avoid taking any more risks in my explosive journey. But the tides have shifted and it is now time to move toward my new purpose.

I was so enlightened after watching “Into the Woods,” a classic musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The story teaches lessons about responsibility, sacrifice, and self-discovery. Even in the woods where there is so much uncertainty and challenge, there is always hope and room for growth.

Curtain Call of “Into The Woods” at Samsung Performing Arts Theater

At the gala night, I made sure to come in costume and in time for the show. The first production of the new Theatre Group Asia (TGA), “Into the Woods” (Aug. 7 to 31 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater) was sold out in just two hours. TGA had no recourse but to mount an additional six shows.

Ethel Cruz, Noey, Noel, Chloe dela Merced, Yohann Agoncillo, Judy Ann Santos, Ruffa Gutierrez, Susan Joven, Mia Borromeo, Tim Yap, Ching Cruz, and Pepper Teehankee

The invitational gala night drew an illustrious crowd from Manila’s social, cultural, and art circles, transforming the theater into a vibrant hub of creativity and celebration. The powerhouse cast also made a striking appearance on the red carpet, dressed in stylish, statement-making ensembles, before heading backstage to deliver an evening of unforgettable performances that brought the house to its feet.

Directed by Chari Arespacochaga, the production features a powerhouse cast led by Olivier and Tony Award winner Lea Salonga as The Witch in her Philippine musical comeback. Joining her are Arielle Jacobs (Cinderella), Eugene Domingo (Jack’s Mother), Josh Dela Cruz (Prince Charming/The Wolf), Nyoy and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante (The Baker and The Baker’s Wife), Nic Chien (Jack), Joreen Bautista (Rapunzel), Mark Bautista (Rapunzel’s Prince), Teetin Villanueva (Little Red Riding Hood), Tex Ordoñez-De Leon, Sarah Facuri, and Kakki Teodoro (Cinderella’s Stepmother and Stepsisters), Carla Guevara Laforteza (Granny/The Giant), Jamie Wilson (Cinderella’s Father/The Steward), and Rody Vera (The Narrator). Covers include Ima Castro, Niño Alejandro, Jillian Ita-As, and Jep Go.

Chito Vijandre, Cristalle Belo-Pitt, Sea Princess, Crickette and Donnie Tantoco, and Ricky Toledo

“Into the Woods” is the first official production of TGA apart from last year’s theater breakout show “Request sa Radyo,” directed by the late theater maverick and TGA co-founder Bobby Garcia.

Apart from Salonga shining so incredibly as the Witch, it was delightful to watch her son, 18-year-old Nic Chien play the role of Jack. The bond between mother and son has gotten stronger with the coming out of Nic as a trans man. Their journey of openness has made them even closer as they deal with issues of identity and sexuality.

“The only advice I can give is to be open to listening to your child. If your child has found the courage to open up to you, it must have been after a very long time of self-reflection, thought, meditation, asking questions, doing research, and trying to find answers. So, do not be judgmental of this young person who wants to connect with you,” Salonga says. “Your child is probably extremely terrified of receiving judgment from you, but as a parent, you are the person who is supposed to love unconditionally. And unconditionally means, no questions asked, I love you, period, full stop.”

On Aug. 1, Malu and J. Gamboa celebrated Cirkulo’s 30th anniversary with family and close friends. It’s been three decades since Cirkulo first opened its red, round doors to become one of Manila’s favorite restaurants. This anniversary was more than just a date on the calendar; it was a heartfelt reunion with those who have been part of the journey since the very beginning.

As guests gathered to commemorate this special evening, they were treated to a menu of favorites that have been served since Day One prepared by chef J. Gamboa and his team. Jamon serrano and chicken croquetas, spinach hojaldres, paella negra, cochinillo asado, callos ala Madrileña… dishes first taught by no less than Señor Anastacio de Alba, the father of Spanish cuisine in the Philippines.

Irene Martel-Francisco and Tessa Alindogan

Each one was a nostalgic reminder of the flavors that have made Cirkulo a cherished destination for food lovers.

The night was alive with music, thanks to the talents of DJs Lui Pimentel, Mon Lindo, and John-C Syquia. They filled the air with classic hits that whisked everyone back to the early party days of Cirkulo. The blend of laughter, nostalgia, and great tunes made for an unforgettable celebration. Special thanks goes to Mr. Werner Berger of Werdenberg Corporation, Cirkulo’s long-time supplier whose free-flowing cava kept the festivities sparkling.

As we look back at these incredible 30 years, we feel a deep sense of pride and joy. Cirkulo has not just been a restaurant; it has been a place of timeless milestones, special memories, and occasions. Looking forward to more years of culinary adventures and cherished moments!
