Guimaras stop opens triathlon season

Inquirer Sports Staff

A busy season for triathletes kicks off on March 8 when Guimaras, long-regarded as the mango capital of the country, hosts a 5150 event for the first time, bringing Olympic-distance racing to its scenic shores.

Featuring a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-km bike and 10-km run, the Guimaras 5150 will have athletes navigating the clear, blue waters off Playa de Paraiso before rolling through the countryside on their bikes, where stunning views and landmarks add spice to the challenge.

And like any other 5150 event, the triathlon weekend starts with the Sunrise Sprint, a 750-m swim, 20-km bike and 5-km run race, which offers first-timers and those doing the sport for recreation can take part.

Organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., headed by Princess Galura, the event has steadily expanded through the years with stops at world-class events to destinations like Subic Bay, Cebu, Bohol, Davao and Samal Island.
