The Devil Rides Mercedes
“What would Jesus drive,” posed a popular automotive query a few years ago. A corollary to that would be: “What would the devil ride?” One answer, according to the new movie “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” is a car with the three-pointed star. If luxury, presence, and power are the desired attributes, then Mercedes-Benz has plenty of options within its extensive stable. Mercedes-Benz chose to continue its presence in the new movie, a sequel to the original 2006 film.
Centered on the world of high fashion, “The Devil Wears Prada” has its main character Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine. Runway sets and dictates fashion trends, making Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, extremely powerful in her field. First shown on screen alighting from a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Miranda soon puts everyone on edge just by entering the room.

The new movie sees Miranda Priestly getting an upgrade, to the uber-luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Aside from being the ideal sedan to motor from a New York corner-suite office to an upscale boutique to the Hamptons, the Maybach also serves as a mobile meeting room of sorts. Characters such as Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Nigel (Stanley Tucci) can hold an impromptu planning session within its serene cabin. Mercedes-Benz produced a one-off “Devil Wears Prada 2”-themed Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, outfitted by the brand’s Manufaktur division

Mercedes-Benz offers other forms of luxury transport. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, GLE, and all-electric G-Class are also featured in the film. When more space is needed, the V-Class and Sprinter vans can fit the bill.
The movie itself is a paean to the world of print publications. The once all mighty Runway magazine now has to jostle for attention with blogs and social media posts. An errant article sends Runway’s online reputation tumbling. Enter Andy Sachs, Miranda’s once-assistant and now tasked to head the magazine’s features department. Conflicts of interest and personality ensue, especially when Emily (Emily Blunt), another former assistant and now head of a fashion house, enters the picture. “Devil Wears Prada 2” is an entertaining time spent with this group of characters, 20 years after the original movie.

Speaking of anniversaries, Mercedes-Benz screened a short film before the main feature, depicting the first long-distance journey by motor car. The Benz Patent Motorwagen was driven by the formidable Bertha Benz, who wanted to prove that her husband Karl Benz’s invention was the future of mobility. In keeping with the devilish theme, the “horseless carriage” was so revolutionary it was akin to witchcraft during that time. This year, Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the 140th anniversary of that invention and the technology and innovation that followed.
