2026 Changan Nevo A05: Hidden gem

VJ Bacungan

Sometimes, the best things in life aren’t so easy to spot.

Modern technology has certainly helped us discover new things faster than ever before. However, it has arguably accelerated the need for “instant gratification,” such that the time-consuming tasks related to rigorous research and investigation are often foregone.

Case in point – many of you know of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i and the Toyota ATIV HEV. But let me show you why the rather obscure 2026 Changan Nevo A05 is easily the best electrified four-door of them all, as of press time.

European style

Wherever I took this sedan, people always commented how it resembled more expensive metal like an Audi.

Although this observation may be a product of its rarity, they do have a point because the Nevo A05 certainly looks the part. Besides its exotic Cloud Mountain Green paint scheme, the most striking visual feature of this car is its fastback silhouette.

It may have a traditional trunk lid, but the designers at Changan integrated it beautifully with the steeply raked rear windscreen to create a striking form. The subtle trunk spoiler and wraparound LED taillights denote hints of Alfa Romeo, while the faux rear diffuser with carbon-fiber wrap and chrome trim add a sporting flavor.

Additional chrome on the window surrounds emphasizes the Nevo A05’s classy vibe, while the high beltline makes it looks less dowdy than, say, the Seal 5 DM-i. Even the gloss-black, 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 215/55-series tires complement the carbon-fiber-wrapped side skirts.

This four-door’s front end is no less dramatic – its powerful LED headlights extend nearly the whole length of the fender, while the sleek front grill leads the eye down to a rather aggressive lower bumper.

Sleek cabin

Inside, the Nevo A05 gets an interior that is not only more premium than its rivals, but also more modern.

Besides the abundance of black leather and soft-touch materials, European influences continue with the oval-shaped steering wheel and narrow digital gauge cluster, reminiscent of Peugeots. And then there’s the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that also offers a superb view of the super-clear 360-degree camera.

However, I would have liked fully separate controls for the climate-control system, which can be tricky to access while you’re using a navigation app. Indeed, the whole screen could do with a bevy of physical buttons and knobs that allow you to adjust settings and move between menus with little distraction, akin to the superbly laid out Honda Civic e:HEV.

Nonetheless, the Nevo A05 is nicely equipped with things like an electric sunroof, wireless charging pad, ambient lighting and electrically adjustable driver’s seat. The trunk is also capacious, although a split-folding seat back and a full-size spare wheel would have been greatly appreciated.

From the oval steering wheel to the huge center touchscreen, the Nevo AO5’s cabin is plush and modern.

Fabulous efficiency

Under the hood, this four-door gets a 1.5-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve inline-4 gasoline engine mated to an 18.4-kWh battery pack and a front-mounted electric motor for a combined output of 212 horsepower and 330 Newton-meters of torque.

Besides the superb acceleration, the Nevo A05 is blessed with one of the best-tuned suspension setups in its class, managing to offer a supple ride and perky handling in high-speed corners (unlike the rather wallowy Seal 5 DM-i). It also gets powerful brakes, although the brake pedal could do with more feel.

Driving the Changan through tight spaces is likewise easy-peasy, despite being a large sedan, thanks to the light steering that lacks feedback at higher speeds. Another great feature of the Nevo A05 is that it can easily be charged while idling, even offering a “Park Charge” feature to ensure that you get energy back from burning gasoline.

Speaking of fuel, this sedan is unsurprisingly energy-efficient – we got 19 to 22 kilometers per liter in the city and 22 to 25 kilometers per liter on the expressway, although it is entirely possible to use zero gasoline at all, thanks to the generous battery-only range of around 100 kilometers. Changan Philippines claims a combined range of around 1,250 kilometers.

Finally, the Nevo A05 avoided the mistake of the similarly priced Seal 5 DM-i Premium by offering a full adaptive driver-assistance system (ADAS) with life-saving features like adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keep assist.

Best in class

Overall, the 2026 Changan Nevo A05 is a stylish, spacious and well-equipped sedan that is nice to drive and immensely fuel-efficient.

At P1,195,000, it offers better value for money and a superior driving experience than the P1,198,000 BYD Seal 5 DM-i Premium. The Changan also easily outguns the P1,198,000 Toyota ATIV HEV, which does come with the excellent Toyota Safety Sense ADAS, but a measly battery range, fewer standard features and a less-plush cabin.

Indeed, the Nevo A05 punches well above its weight, able to go toe-to-toe with the absolutely sensational Honda Civic e:HEV – although the Japanese contender is still better to drive, the Chinese upstart is not far behind, while being P795,000 cheaper. Even a Civic e:HEV owner who rode the Changan found it hugely impressive.

There is a certain thrill in uncovering really nice things. And with this review, I hope that this great car won’t be so hard to find anymore.
