Still shaping the metro after 95 years

Vaughn Alviar

It’s difficult to imagine Metro Manila without landmarks like Greenhills, Wack Wack or Ortigas Center.

For both residents and visitors, these places have become part of the capital’s identity, underscoring the vital role that their builder, Ortigas Land, has played in the country’s real estate landscape.

A seasoned developer

The company’s founders likely could not have imagined that their investment 95 years ago would evolve into one of the nation’s most established and recognizable developers.

Ortigas Land was founded in 1931 through the partnership of businessman Don Francisco “Paco” Ortigas, industrialist Vicente Madrigal and former President Manuel L. Quezon.

They acquired 4,033 hectares of land known as Hacienda de Mandaloyon–which straddled Pasig, Quezon City and Mandaluyong–from the Augustinian order. By transforming the idle estate into industrial properties, they helped lay the groundwork for what would eventually become Ortigas Center by the 1960s.

In the 1970s, as Filipinos began embracing modern shopping destinations, Ortigas Land introduced Greenhills Center.

This success emboldened the company to diversify into retail. In the 1970s, as Filipinos began embracing modern shopping destinations, Ortigas Land introduced Greenhills Center, which was among the first shopping complexes of its kind in Metro Manila.

This seasoned developer also then curated world-class homes and neighborhoods that remain aspirational to this day. A strong reputation still precedes residential icons such as Greenhills, Greenmeadows, Valle Verde and Wack Wack.

Ortigas Land enhances quality of life by creating mixed-use estates that help ensure work-life balance.

Setting new benchmarks

Today, 95 years since its founding, Ortigas Land continues to thrive by building on its enduring strengths, staying attuned to evolving market needs and setting new benchmarks for urban development.

Much of that staying power comes from its ability to secure and shape strategic locations across the capital region.

Its developments, whether established economic hubs or emerging estates, are either near or seamlessly integrated with schools, hospitals, churches and other vital institutions. With major infrastructure projects also improving access to these sites, Ortigas Land’s communities are positioned for greater connectivity and long-term value.

Ortigas Land has endured because it has never stopped evolving.

Everyday livability

That sense of access is matched by a focus on everyday livability.

Through its mixed-use estates, Ortigas Land creates environments where offices, retail destinations, recreational spaces and residences sit side by side, drastically shortening daily commutes and granting residents more control over their time.

This is evident in legacy destinations such as Greenhills Center, which continues to evolve in response to the modern demand for more self-contained, people-centered addresses.

The Galleon is a premium mixed-use development that puts residences, offices and retail within one prestigious structure.

In Ortigas Center, The Galleon carries the same idea forward as a premium, two-tower mixed-use development that brings residences, offices and retail spaces together within one prestigious complex.

Ortigas Land’s newer estates further reflect this evolution.

Capitol Commons and Ortigas East offer distinct experiences while focusing on well-being, accessibility and character.

At Capitol Commons, diversity is reflected in residences designed for specific markets, from Maven for younger residents to The Imperium for a more established clientele. At Ortigas East, Maple at Verdant Towers and The Glaston support the estate’s vision of a greener, more sustainable urban environment.

No small feat

Most definitely, it is no small feat for any brand to remain relevant and respected for 95 years. Ortigas Land has endured because it has never stopped learning, constantly evolving alongside the aspirations of the people and communities it serves.
