BIZ BUZZ: BSP festival coins fly off the shelves

Ian Nicolas P. Cigaral

Looks like the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has another crowd-pleaser on its hands.

The central bank’s colorful new commemorative coins celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage are proving to be a hit among collectors and festival fans alike.

The P100 Philippine Festivals series features a giant lantern motif woven with symbols from 12 of the country’s biggest festivals.

One design is being rolled out each month to match the celebration of the featured event—from the colorful Sinulog Festival in Cebu City every January to the dazzling Giant Lantern Festival in San Fernando City in December.

Biz Buzz hears the limited edition coins that sell for P5,000 each have been brisk sellers, with some provinces even organizing their own launch events to mark the release of the coins honoring their local festivals.

Turns out a simple coin can still spark a lot of pride—and festive spirit—across the archipelago.
