BIZ BUZZ: Budget chief’s holy grail

Nyah Genelle C. De Leon

Just when things couldn’t get any more interesting in Philippine politics, the newly minted Department of Budget and Management chief turns out to have a highly unique spiritual niche.

Not only is Kim Robert De Leon the youngest member of the Cabinet at just 32 years old, but the newly minted budget chief also comes with a rather divine distinction.

Aside from his stellar resume, De Leon is a certified Guinness World Record holder for amassing a staggering 2,398 papal stamps, much of which feature Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis.

Think of papal stamps as Vatican’s official, highly collectible cards that carry the literal face of the Papacy.

What started as a hobby tied to his church ministry eventually secured official world-record status in 2022, after a meticulous verification overseen by a priest during the 41st anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s first visit to the Philippines and the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter.

Whether his ministry translates to a more blessed fiscal year remains to be seen, but this certainly gives a playful meaning to putting a “stamp of approval” on government spending or maybe even some divine intervention that could finally make the national budget corruption-proof.
