BIZ BUZZ: Piki, Gabby: Together again?

Tina Arceo-Dumlao

Lopez blood may be thicker than water, after all.

At least that is what hopeful observers have been telling Biz Buzz, sharing that warring first cousins Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III and Federico “Piki” Lopez are getting ready to take tentative steps toward having a meaningful, heart-to-heart, face-to-face conversation.

No doubt those talks between Piki and his Manong Gabby will delve into the possibility of repairing their damaged family as well as professional relations that have unfortunately been hogging the headlines since February.

That was when the Gabby camp, holding majority control of privately held holding firm Lopez Inc., voted to ease out Piki as president.

That surprise move put their family battle out in the open with both camps slinging pointed words at the other, trading claims and legal actions around themes of spectacular mismanagement, utter lack of transparency and accountability and different kinds of “poison pills”.

The adversaries, however, have agreed on a sort of ceasefire after the Gabby camp withdrew its resolution removing Piki as president.

Piki welcomed the gesture and said in his own statement that it was a “possible first step for all parties to finally resolve issues dividing the family.”

Statements have indeed been issued and now comes the possibility of a face-to-face meeting that will perhaps remind them that their ties are stronger than business challenges and that family—especially one as storied as theirs—could still come first.
