BIZ BUZZ: EastWest checks both charts and chi for 2026

Emmanuel John Abris

Clients of Gotianun-led East West Banking Corp. recently received a rather unusual briefing: part economics lecture, part feng shui forecast.

In a series of curated gatherings in Pampanga and Metro Manila, the bank invited clients from its retail, priority and corporate banking segments to hear expert insights on how to navigate the fast-moving economic landscape in 2026.

Taking the stage first was economist and University of Asia and the Pacific professor (UA&P) Bernardo Villegas, who walked participants through emerging opportunities amid shifting local and global market conditions. Despite uncertainties, Villegas said the Philippines remains on track for moderate but steady growth.

But because the new year is also the Year of the Fire Horse, EastWest decided that charts and growth projections alone might not be enough. Enter feng shui expert Master Patrick Fernandez, who offered guidance on how individuals and businesses can harness the year’s fast-paced and energetic momentum.

For EastWest president Jackie S. Fernandez, the mix of perspectives reflects the bank’s role as a guide for clients navigating uncertain markets. While conditions may change quickly, she said EastWest aims to remain a “steady anchor” helping clients stay on a path of progress.

The bank is also expanding its stream of market insights. EastWest recently forged a partnership with UA&P for the Economic Watch newsletter, which will provide curated analysis and trends to help clients make informed financial decisions throughout the year.

For Raffy Algarra, EastWest senior executive vice president and head of financial markets and wealth management, the goal is simple: equip clients with foresight—whether from economic research or advisory services—so they can refine their wealth strategies and move forward with confidence.
