BIZ BUZZ: Kerwin Tan takes CFO crown

Emmanuel John Abris

Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) finance chief Kerwin Max Tan has picked up a regional accolade after years of steering some of the property giant’s biggest capital market deals.

Tan, RLC’s chief financial, risk and compliance officer, was named CFO of the Year at the 25th Global Edition of the Asia Business Leader of the Year Awards in Singapore on Aug. 3.

The award recognizes finance executives for their work in sustainable growth, governance, innovation and business value.

Tan has overseen RLC’s finance, risk management, compliance and capital market initiatives since 2016.

That stretch saw the Gokongwei-led developer tap both the debt and equity markets to bankroll expansion while maintaining financial flexibility.

Among the biggest transactions under his watch was RLC’s P13.2-billion bond issuance in 2020, at the height of the pandemic.

A year later, the company listed RL Commercial REIT Inc., raising about P23.5 billion in what was then the country’s largest real estate investment trust initial public offering.

For Tan, however, the award is hardly a one-man show.

“I see this recognition as a reflection of the work of the entire team,” he said, adding that finance should help businesses weigh their choices, manage risks and direct resources where they can make the biggest impact.

Tan, who has nearly three decades of experience in banking, treasury, corporate finance and risk management, is also helping RLC chase an ambitious milestone: P25 billion in net income by its 50th anniversary in 2030 under its Vision 5-25-50 strategy.
