BIZ BUZZ: SM’s privacy play pays off
In an age when companies are collecting more customer data than ever, one of the biggest compliments a retailer can get is not about sales—it is about trust.
That was the case for SM Retail, which recently received the National Privacy Commission’s (NPC) Seal of Registration Compliance Excellence Award for the private sector, a recognition given to organizations that demonstrate transparency and accountability in handling personal information.
SM Retail president Jonathan Ng said the recognition reflects the efforts of the company’s various business units to strengthen privacy compliance and awareness, noting that sound data governance plays a crucial role in maintaining customer trust and loyalty.
SM Retail was also named a finalist for the Privacy Initiative of the Year award, which recognized its efforts to educate employees through training programs, learning modules and privacy awareness sessions designed around real-world retail scenarios.
Meanwhile, SM’s data protection officer, Leyson San Juan, earned a spot as a finalist for Data Protection Officer of the Year for the second straight year. The latest recognitions build on SM Retail’s Privacy Management Program Award, won last year.
For retailers, protecting customer information has become a balancing act. The more personalized the shopping experience becomes, the more critical it is to ensure that personal data stays secure.
And while consumers may never notice the policies, training sessions and compliance checks happening behind the scenes, companies know that trust—much like privacy—is difficult to regain once lost.
