BIZ BUZZ: BPI takes the EV route

Emmanuel John Abris

Banks have been racing to make digital payments part of everyday life. Now, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is taking that strategy a step further—this time by plugging into the country’s growing electric vehicle ecosystem.

BPI has teamed up with ride-hailing platform Green GSM, allowing users to pay for fully electric taxi rides directly through their linked BPI accounts.

The partnership allows booking and cashless payments via the Green GSM app, making eco-friendly commuting a little more convenient while expanding the bank’s digital payment network.

The move also reflects BPI’s broader sustainability agenda, with the bank saying it wants to encourage clients to choose transportation options that produce zero emissions.

Green GSM, which operates a fleet of VinFast electric vehicles, says it has already completed more than 5 million electric trips in the Philippines, helping avoid over 6,300 tons of carbon emissions since its local launch.

To sweeten the ride, BPI users who pay through their linked accounts can earn 20 GSM Green Points for every successful trip until July 31, with the points redeemable as discounts on future rides.
