Globe taps KDDI for mobile revamp

Logan Kal-El M. Zapanta

Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. has teamed up with Japanese telecommunications (telco) KDDI Corp. in revamping its mobile services and retail operations.

In a statement, Globe said the partnership would focus on developing new mobile offerings and redesigning its retail strategy by drawing on KDDI’s experience in Japan, where telco services are integrated with digital platforms that generate recurring revenue.

As a start, Globe and KDDI will study ways to expand Globe’s retail footprint and redesign its stores.

This comes about two years after Globe rationalized parts of its physical retail network as more customers shifted to digital channels.

“Globe has always believed that growth goes hand in hand with elevating our overall customer experience philosophy,” Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz said.

“This strategic partnership with KDDI gives us the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s most advanced telco and digital ecosystems while bringing Globe’s deep understanding of the Filipino customer to the table,” Cruz added.

Under the partnership, Globe will also explore how KDDI’s business model in Japan can complement Globe’s mobile subscriber base of about 67 million customers.

Globe said the partnership is part of its effort to introduce new mobile services and modernize its retail network as consumer demand increasingly shifts toward digital channels.

“As we look toward 2027 and beyond, our goal is to create value that goes beyond connectivity and helps build a stronger, more inclusive digital ecosystem for the country,” Cruz said.

The collaboration expands Globe’s relationship with KDDI, which in May joined Ayala Corp. and Mitsubishi Corp. in studying the development of an “Intelligent City” in Makati.

Announced during President Marcos’ visit to Japan, the project is aimed at using digital technologies, advanced connectivity and data-driven systems to improve urban services and business activities.
