Metro Retail adding to supermarket chain
Gaisano-led Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. has broken ground for four new supermarket stores in the provinces of Cebu and Leyte in a bid to expand its retail network while increasing accessibility in these areas.
In a stock exchange filing on Friday, Metro Retail said it is set to build a Metro Supermarket in Barangay Tayud, Liloan in Cebu, as well as Metro Value Mart stores in two other barangays.
Also, the Visayas-focused company will build another supermarket in Isabel, Leyte.
“These new establishments mark the beginning of a new chapter for these communities,” said Benedicto Miranda, Metro Retail vice president for store network development.
“Investing in these communities is not just about business; it’s about creating lasting relationships and making a positive difference in people’s lives,” he added.
The company currently operates 64 stores across the country, with 42 branches located in the Visayas.
Its store formats include Metro Supermarket, Metro Department Store, Super Metro Hypermarket and Metro Value Mart.
Metro Retail earlier said it was pursuing its robust five-year expansion plan in Luzon after opening a three-hectare Metro Distribution Center in Laguna province.
The company noted that the “modern” distribution center could be further expanded within the 10-hectare property it occupied.
The facility is capable` of handling up to 25,000 cases daily for both inbound and outbound processes.
This translates to a maximum throughput of 1.5 million cases a month, which Metro Retail said could support their Luzon and Visayas networks.
