PLDT retires 40 year-old OTP security
PLDT Enterprise on Wednesday launched the first telco-enabled fraud management API suite called SmartSafe SilentAccess. This is set to replace the traditional One-Time-Password (OTP) security amid threats of cyber attacks in the Philippines.
SmartSafe is recognized by the global mobile industry body GSMA and key Philippine regulators. These include the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), BangkoSentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), National Privacy Commission (NPC) and National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
Unlike the text message-based authenticator, SmartSafe does not use a third party in preventing phishing and social engineering attacks, which are prevalent in the Philippines. The authentication comes within PLDT and SmartSafe networks, not over public routes.
PLDT Enterprise first vice president Nico Alcoseba said SmartSafe can cater to a wide range of digital transactions for payments and transfers, e-commerce checkouts, and even government services.
Meanwhile, ICT Secretary Henry Aguda said that they are eyeing the country’s adoption of SmartSafe technology as soon as possible.
Aguda also acknowledged PLDT as first mover, citing the evolutions on mobile network generations.
SmartSafe SilentAccess is just the beginning of the full launch of PLDT Enterprise’ ecosystem.
Soon, they are set to introduce SmartSafe NetIdentity for SIM verification and device authenticity; SmartSafe GeoCheck for real-time network location verifier; SmartSafe RoamStatus for roaming or out-of-country coverage indicator; and the SmartSafe KYC+ with enhanced identity verification.
