‘Sari-sari’ store sales soared by 32% in ’24

Transactions made through sari-sari stores and tracked by tech startup Packworks surged by 32 percent in 2024, reflecting rising adoption of digital tools by these small neighborhood shops.
Packworks, which operates an app ecosystem that supports sari-sari store owners, said that over 175,000 stores actively transacted through its Sari.PH Pro app last year.
This was a notable rise from the 133,000 stores recorded in 2023.
“Our data illustrates the robust growth of sari-sari store activities in the regions,” said Bing Tan, founder and chief executive officer of Packworks.
“The surge in the number of stores recorded in our app is a testament to the savvy entrepreneurial spirit of these businesses, which are the grassroots foundation of local economies. As they thrive, they create jobs, stimulate the local retail ecosystem and contribute to the overall economic development of the Philippines,” he said further.
Packworks data showed that the Western Visayas region led the growth with a 62-percent jump in transacting stores, followed by Calabarzon at 50 percent and Bicol at 47 percent.
Other regions experiencing strong growth included Central Luzon with a 26-percent rise and Central Visayas with 21 percent.
The most significant spikes in transactions occurred from September to December, traditionally the busiest shopping season in the Philippines.
On average, the number of transacting stores nationwide increased by 12 percent.
However, while most regions saw substantial growth, Mimaropa recorded a decline in transacting stores, particularly in April and May 2024, when Typhoon “Aghon” hit the area.
Transactions fell by 2 percent in April and approximately 38 percent in May, showing the vulnerability of small businesses to natural disasters.
Access to services
Packworks cofounder Ibba Bernardo highlighted the importance of improving access to essential services to support sari-sari stores, particularly in disaster-prone areas.
“Aside from providing them with business tools, empowering sari-sari stores also means ensuring they have the essential services to remain operational, even during challenging times,” Bernardo said.
“Access to reliable internet connectivity and power is critical for community preparedness and recovery,” he added.
Further, Bernardo said that strengthening these crucial services will help nurture these businesses, making them more resilient and sustainable.
