Drive then what?: Christmas and 39 years!
Ah, Christmas in the Philippines! The air is cooler (thanks to December mornings, not traffic fumes), the malls are lit up like Las Vegas, and the roads? Well, let’s just say they’re more of a parking lot than a speedway.
It also means that it’s time for another Philippine Daily Inquirer anniversary. In fact we are at the most critical age of 39! That magical age where you’re old enough to know better but young enough to still make questionable decisions like taking EDSA during rush hour or that pair of shoes that tipped over your credit card limit.
Before we dive into how to survive the madness of Christmas traffic, let’s appreciate the bright spots in Philippine motoring this year.
Toyota Tamaraw’s comeback
The icon is back! Toyota gave us all the feels by resurrecting the Tamaraw—an MVP in every Pinoy road trip from the 80s to now. This reimagined workhorse is tougher, sleeker, and ready to take on EDSA traffic (good luck, Tamaraw!).
The EV wave grows stronger
Electric vehicles are finally making a buzz louder than your Tito’s karaoke machine. With brands like BYD, Hyundai, and even Nissan Leaf making waves, it seems like the future is electric. Now if only we could charge our phones and cars at the same time, we’d be set.
Zero tariff on EVs extended until 2028
Finally, some news that doesn’t drive us up the wall. The government’s move to extend the zero-tariff policy on EVs and parts until 2028 is music to our ears. It’s a big step towards greener roads and (hopefully) fewer gasoline station horror stories.
Green license plates
The ultimate eco-chic accessory for electric vehicles (EVs). They don’t just scream sustainability—they also unlock perks like coding exemptions, priority parking, and reduced fees. Thanks to the EVIDA law, these plates are your ticket to driving green in style!
On a personal note, our company Tuason Racing celebrated 25 years in the business and I assumed the role of CEO, which technically made me ChicEO. We are gearing up for evolution, the next generation, and hoping to get more women (and everyone else) into motorsports!
As we said, old enough to know better.
Traffic jams during Christmas are as Filipino as bibingka and puto bumbong. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be that bad. Let’s sprinkle a little courtesy on the roads this season, shall we?
Don’t be a Grinch behind the wheel
Is that one parking slot really worth a honking match? Smile, wave, let them have it—it’s Christmas. Besides, your kids are watching, and nobody wants Santa’s naughty list.
Patience is the ultimate GPS
Waze can only do so much when half of Manila is trying to get to Greenhills. Accept the chaos, bring snacks, and play some Mariah Carey to keep the Christmas spirit alive.
Don’t drink and drive — period
Sure, the holidays are filled with parties, but remember, a steering wheel isn’t a cocktail shaker. If you must drink, designate a driver or call a ride. It’s not just about avoiding the cops—it’s about keeping everyone safe, including yourself.
As the Christmas season goes on full gear and we are about to begin PDI’s 40th year, let’s toast (responsibly!) to better roads, more innovative cars, and a motoring scene that keeps improving.
Lets AWD (Arrive Without Drama) and be a SUV (Safe, Unstressed and Vibrant) you!
Happy Anniversary, Philippine Daily Inquirer! Stay chic, stay driven!
