Marcos pays tribute to Pinoy seafarers
President Marcos on Wednesday honored Filipino seafarers who have been injured or killed while working in areas affected by armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions and security incidents around the world.
Speaking at this year’s Philippine Maritime Convention in Manila, Mr. Marcos also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect the rights, welfare, and safety of Filipino seafarers.
“Our seafarers have found themselves caught in armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, attacks, and other security incidents they did not create and in which they had no part,” he said.
“Some have suffered injuries, while others have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. We honor their service and their courage, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families that they have left behind,” he added.
Based on Department of Migrant Workers’ data, there were 589,179 Filipino seafarers in 2025—the highest number recorded since 1984.
