BIZ BUZZ: AI joins war vs scams

Taiwan-based Gogolook, developer of scam detection app Whoscall, is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to provide an “advanced” fraud defense, as cybercriminals continue to target Filipinos.

Its co-founder and global chief executive officer Jeff Kuo said the revamped Whoscall anti-scam app has been boosted with AI prediction technology and an even comprehensive database.

With more threats now shifting to messaging apps and digital ads, the upgrades include a web checker, immediately alerting users when they access phishing or fake websites.

Users can also upload screenshots and photos to identify risks.

“Supported by ScamAdviser and other partners, which provide a database of tens of millions of websites, these features train AI models for early detection, enabling Whoscall to block threats faster and more accurately,” Gogolook country head Mel Migriño said.

Its tie-ups with local authorities and partners are also strengthened, the firm said.

Based on its 2025 Asia Scam Report: Philippines, Gogolook stated that 72 percent of Filipinos have encountered a scam. As these sham tricks continue to plague the nation, 52 percent felt psychological stress, with 40 percent saying it had an impact on their mental health.
