BIZ BUZZ: From Japan with love

When Toyota Motor Corp. chair Akio Toyoda suggests over a meeting in Taiwan that a Rookie Racing Garage be set up in Manila, you just have to say ‘yes’, according to Toyota Motor Philippines chair Alfred Ty.

There is no need to quibble over the finer details at the outset as it is an honor that Toyoda himself wants to share his passion for cars with enthusiasts in the Philippines, thus the opening in the Philippines of the first Rookie Racing Garage outside Japan.

Rookie Racing Garage Manila is envisioned as a gathering place where Filipino car enthusiasts can come together and share stories and showcase their builds, no matter what automotive brand they support.

“We believe it could become the first hang-out place of its kind in the country—a place built around the joy of being a car enthusiast,” Ty said.

Rookie Racing is a company founded by Toyoda in 2019 and operates outside the Toyota group, just to give it more flexibility and leeway to execute ideas. It is headquartered at Fuki Motorsports Forest, near the Fuji Speedway in Shizuoka, Japan.

Manila’s version of Rookie Racing Garage is coming to life in cooperation with Toyota Manila Bay and Autoplus Sports, a respected name in the local automotive industry known for its world-class restorations and high-performance tuning.
