DigiPlus hit by sudden online gaming ban in Brazil
DigiPlus Interactive Corp.’s planned expansion into Brazil has run into a regulatory roadblock as the country immediately prohibited fixed-odds betting and online gaming activities.
The setback came after DigiPlus had spent two years laying the groundwork for its entry into what was supposed to be its first international market.
On Monday, DigiPlus said Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had issued a Medida Provisória, or Provisional Measure banning the operation, offering, intermediation and advertising of fixed-odds betting and online gaming activities.
The measure took effect immediately upon publication. It remains subject to approval by the Brazilian Congress within the constitutionally prescribed period, which may extend to 120 days.
DigiPlus said it was complying with the government directive. Its immediate priority is to process customer withdrawals and return customer funds within the prescribed period.
“The situation remains fluid and is not final, as the relevant legislative and legal processes continue to develop,” the company said.
DigiPlus began preparing for its Brazil expansion in 2024. It applied for a federal gaming license in August of that year before obtaining definitive authority to operate in January 2025.
Brazil had been positioned as the company’s first overseas market.
DigiPlus was also preparing to enter South Africa, where it secured three gaming licenses in April 2026. The licenses gave the company a route into the country’s online gambling market, estimated to be worth $4.9 billion.
Despite the latest regulatory setback, DigiPlus said the Brazil development was not expected to materially affect its overall financial or operating position.
DigiPlus said it would continue monitoring the legislative and legal proceedings in Brazil. It will issue further disclosures should any material development arise.
The company operates BingoPlus, ArenaPlus and GameZone in the Philippines.
